The formulation is well-suited for inclusion of the underlying dynamics of molecular photoionization and its dependence on molecular geometry. Results are presented for three typical pump laser energies selected so as to investigate qualitatively different patterns of the spatio-temporal propagation of wave packets on the double-minimum potential curve and of their associated photoelectron spectra. Photoelectron angular distributions are also reported for different orientations of linearly polarized pump and probe pulses. The resulting photoelectron spectra illustrate the importance of a proper description of the underlying photoionization amplitudes and their dependence on geometry for unraveling wave packet dynamics from pump–probe photoelectron signals in nonadiabatic regions where the electronic structure evolves rapidly with geometry. The dependence of these photoelectron angular distributions on relative orientation of the molecule and polarization of the probe pulse are also seen to be potentially useful for real-time monitoring of molecular rotation.

Probing wavepacket dynamics with femtosecond energy- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

Several recent studies have demonstrated how well-suited femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectra are for mapping wavepacket dynamics in molecular systems. Theoretical studies of femtosecond photoelectron spectra which incorporate a robust description of the underlying photoionization dynamics should enhance the utility of such spectra as a probe of wavepackets and of the evolution of el...

Time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy using femtosecond visible and high-harmonic light

The angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) has emerged as a leading technique in identifying static key properties of complex systems such as the electronic band structure of adsorbed molecules, ultrathin quantum-well films or high temperature superconductors. We efficiently combined ARPES by using a two-dimensional analyzer for parallel energy (E) and momentum (k||) detection with f...

Monitoring the effect of a control pulse on a conical intersection by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

We have previously shown how femtosecond angle- and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy can be used to monitor quantum wavepacket bifurcation at an avoided crossing or conical intersection and also how a symmetry-allowed conical intersection can be effectively morphed into an avoided crossing by photo-induced symmetry breaking. The latter result suggests that varying the parameters of a ...

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a femtosecond high harmonic light source using a two-dimensional imaging electron analyzer.

An experimental setup for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a femtosecond 1 kHz high harmonic light source and a two-dimensional electron analyzer for parallel energy and momentum detection is presented. A selection of the 27th harmonic (41.85 eV) from the harmonic spectrum of the light source is achieved with a multilayer MoSi double mirror monochromator. The extinction...
